Creekline, Waterway & Wetland Management in Melbourne
Constructed wetlands, creeklines and waterway corridors are some of the most demanding landscapes to establish. Plantings have to survive changing water levels, weeds move in quickly, and the asset has to meet a clear standard before it can be handed over. Regen Environmental Management maintains these sites from planting through to handover and beyond, for developers, councils and asset owners across Melbourne.

Built to Melbourne Water standards, maintained to handover
Wetlands and waterways built as part of a development are designed and accepted against Melbourne Water's standards, then pass through practical completion and a defects liability period before they are transferred. Until transfer, the developer and their contractors remain responsible for the works.
For plantings, Melbourne Water's waterway standard sets a three month establishment period followed by a 24 month maintenance period, 27 months in total. Before final handover, wetland planting has to reach strong vegetation cover with weed cover kept below 5%. Our maintenance program is planned around those targets from the first visit, so there are no surprises at the end.
Development Services Scheme works
Many waterways and wetlands in Melbourne's growth areas are delivered under a Development Services Scheme, the drainage strategy and funding arrangement Melbourne Water uses for new development. Developers often build these works themselves and are reimbursed once the works meet Melbourne Water's standards. We support the landscape and maintenance side of those works, so the vegetation is ready when the asset is.
Defects liability and maintenance periods
The defects liability period is where a project is won or lost. Plant losses, weed outbreaks and erosion all have to be dealt with before the certificate of completion. We provide:
- Regular weed control in and around the water body and batters
- Replacement planting where plants fail, timed so it does not delay handover
- Monitoring of plant cover and weed levels against the handover criteria
- Clear records of the work completed, for the developer and the asset owner
Revegetation to maturity
Handover is a milestone, not the finish line. Indigenous plantings take years to mature into a self-sustaining wetland or creekline. We continue maintaining sites after handover for councils and asset owners, so the planting matures into healthy habitat and a valued community space.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the maintenance period before Melbourne Water takes over a wetland?
Melbourne Water's waterway standard sets a three month planting establishment period followed by a 24 month maintenance period, 27 months in total, before the defects period can end. Your project's conditions will set the exact requirements.
What has to be achieved before handover?
Planting must reach strong vegetation cover with weeds kept below 5%, and final handover cannot happen within six weeks of replanting. We track cover and weed levels through the maintenance period so the site is ready on time.
Do you work with councils as well as developers?
Yes. We maintain waterways, wetlands and creeklines during the developer's maintenance period and after handover for councils and asset owners.
Where do you work?
Across Melbourne and Geelong.
